"Single-parent (also lone parent and sole parent) is a parent who cares for one or more children without the assistance of another parent in the home."
Yep, that's me...or will be in 6 months. Did I think it would happen four months ago? Not a chance. I was getting "on track," until one faithful night sitting on a hospital bed, and then it all came crashing down.
It was May and I was offered a one year contract to a good job In a town called Iqaluit. It is a treeless, cold, and somewhat isolated community in the territory of Nunavut. The job was a Front Desk agent at a hotel called "Frobisher Inn." I had never been so far north and decided it would be an exciting experience, at least more exciting then the east coast of Newfoundland from which I am bound to be embedded and remain for the rest of my life.
So I packed my things and said a quick good-bye to my friends and family, not knowing I would return again in six months. After a night in Ottawa I landed in the arctic dessert dressed for success with my bag of cloths in one hand and my brothers cheep Yamaha guitar in the other. Walking out of the plane and into the crisp cold air I was nervous to meet my new employees. I wonders what they were like, what they looked like, and if I would be what they expected. Standing in the airport was a tall man in a dark suit, matching tie and a sign that read "Frobisher Inn." I walked up to him a little shy and unsure.
"Aahh, you must be the new employee they are all talking about" he said in a strong Quebec ascent. "My name is Martin, I will drive you to the hotel and give you a short tour around the town."
I smiled a little amused by the way he talked as he grabbed my things and started to carry them to the company van.
